FASHION FOR CHANGE

Tanzania Women Chamber of Commerce (TWCC) in collaboration with GIZ Business Scouts for development are implementing a project on “increasing Tanzanian women competitiveness in textile, apparel and fashion industry” which is targeting women entrepreneurs with a theme “fashion for Change’. The aim of the project is to build capacity of women and enable them to increase quality of their products, get exposure to sustainable value chain in the textile business, know latest trends for various categories of customers and networking along the value chain. In addition, the project is linking beneficiaries with successful international fashion designers locally, regionally and internationally so as to share knowledge on how they have been able to sustain their businesses as well as access wider market.

The project is targeting 35 Tanzania Women Companies in a formalized textile, garments or apparel with the ambition to capture wider market. Textile and clothing sector are the second largest sector in the developing world after agriculture and it is dominated by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and holds the potential to create jobs for millions of women and youth across the world.

Currently beneficiaries of this project have received capacity building training and enrolled into mentorship program. The trainees went through a series of training and mentorship from local and international consultants whereas there were practical sessions, online sessions and field visits to small and medium scale factories. They also got a chance to exhibit on a pop-up shop event organized by Swahili Fashion week Organizers (361 Africa) at the Canadian High Commission Residence in Tanzania where trainees had an opportunity for learn from other exhibitors, experience sharing and increased exhibition skills

The project is also facilitating participants to attend Swahili fashion week exhibition and runway show in order to show case their products to potential customers as well as learning from the successful textile fashion designers from across the Region and beyond.

Participants participated on mentorship program and have been allocated to selected Mentors for further guidance to ensure utilization of the knowledge and skills received through training. Another role of mentors was to guide participants during preparation of collection which they are showcasing in this Swahili fashion week runway show and exhibition from 3rd to 5th December, 2021.

Currently TWCC is focusing on empowering women through clusters and is connecting them across the country to ensure women in the same sector have the opportunity to network, share experience and increase partnership along the value chain.
